Statement on the Devastating Earthquake in Haiti

We continue to keep the people of Haiti in our thoughts and prayers a few weeks after this disaster.  We know very well that relief and recovery efforts will be needed for months and years to come.

In this terrible tragedy we note the steady, professional and compassionate efforts of Catholic Relief Services to provide both immediate and ongoing relief to thousands in need.  Their leadership in Petionville is enabling tens of thousands to have the basics of water, food and shelter.  CRS was in Haiti prior to the earthquake and will be there long after the focus of public attention is gone.  This is key to the effectiveness of their relief and recovery efforts.

The needs of displaced and orphaned children are of particular concern.  We must ensure they are safe, not exploited and that resources both within Haiti and internationally are appropriately made available so that children may be both protected and nurtured.

As time goes on, inevitably, the headlines will diminish  -- the needs will not.
