English Language Conversationalist

Description: By telephone, volunteers will provide English conversation practice for English-as-a-Second Language students. Help intermediate and advanced ESL students improve conversational fluency in English as well as gain an understanding of American culture.  This is a good opportunity for someone who likes to work closely with clients.

Purpose: By improving individuals’ fluency in English, volunteers help to open a world of opportunity for people becoming fully integrated into American society.

Where: Manhattan, or from your home

When:  Volunteers will have at least two students to speak with for about a half hour each in the evening.

Duration of Commitment:  6-month minimum

Type of Volunteers:  Individuals or families.

Skills Needed:  Prior experience in instructing students is preferred (teaching degree not needed). Strong written communication skills in English, patience, and adaptability.

Orientation and Training: A brief orientation and training will be held at the site.
