Refugee Resettlement Volunteer

Description: Work directly with refugees and asylees in a variety of ways, depending on your skills and interests.  Volunteers may tutor English or basic literacy, help clients develop professional resumes, develop/update/facilitate workshops and information sessions (computer basics, higher education, cover letter development, etc.), perform mock interviews, research immigrant services in the city, do administrative tasks, or complete other tasks as requested by case managers.

Purpose:  Enable refugees and asylees who recently arrived in the United States to become self-sufficient and help them to settle into a new culture as active members of their communities. 

Where: Midtown Manhattan

When: Consistent commitment during regular business hours (M-F, 9:30am-4:30pm).  Exact hours are flexible, depending on volunteers’ availability.

Duration of Commitment: At least three months

Type of Volunteers: Individuals

Skills Needed: Volunteers must be compassionate, patient, and interested in working with Refugee and Asylee populations.  Volunteers doing resume development must also be very comfortable with Microsoft applications.  Language skills, particularly in French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Hindi, are helpful but not necessary.

Orientation/ Training: Orientation and training done in the department.
