St. Mary's Residence was established and is operated by the Roman Catholic sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity to provide a temporary home "under proper moral influence" for young working women or female students. It was incorporated in 1923 under the membership corporation law of the state of New York. In 1981, St. Mary's certificate of incorporation was amended to provide that it be classified as a type B corporation under Section 201 of the Not-For-Profit Corporation law of the state of New York.
